THE WIRE RULED
Western Union Telegraph Company had a monopoly on wire technology. This technology was successful for over 30 years with its dot-and-dash Morse code, but was limited to only receiving and sending one message at a time. Alexander Graham knew he could improve the telegraph with the possibility of transmitting multiple messages over the same wire at the same time. Through many attempts he created the telephone, a device that could transmit speech electrically on a wire. Graham accomplished his goal of transmitting multiple messages over the same wire at the same time. He took existing technology (a wired based electrical system) and made it do more than what it was originally designed to do.
